Hydro projects generate electricity from flowing water. They reduce the need to burn fossil fuels to generate our power. Project benefits: preserving natural resources; promoting renewable energy generation; reducing dependency on non-renewable resources; helping spread green technology worldwide; and improving health.
Our company Hidroelectrica La Confluencia S.A. is a Chilean hydroelectric power company, created in June 2004. Together with Hidroeléctrica La Higuera S.A., we formed a joint venture under the name "Tinguiririca Energía", co-owned by the Australian company Pacific Hydro and the Norwegian company Statkraft. We run our projects in the Tinguiririca River upper valley, in the Andes Mountains about 120km south of Santiago, Chile.
La Confluencia is a 163 MW run of river hydro power plant, operating since December 2010. The purpose of the project is to utilize the hydrological resources of the Tinguiririca, Portillo and Azufre Rivers in a run of river scheme to generate and supply zero emission energy to the Chilean central electricity grid (SIC). The power plant generates certified emission reductions (CERs) by displacing electricity generation from grid connected fossil fuel-fired power plants that would otherwise be generating electricity.
One of the basic principles of the company is to generate sustainable energy while establishing relationships and ties with local rural communities. In 2007, Tinguiririca Energía founded the "Tinguiririca Participa" grant program, through which the company finances proposals presented by community organizations located near our hydro power stations, in such areas as healthcare, education, and the environment. In the first year of the program, the joint venture financed 11 projects, while today the number of projects surpasses 200. All of these initiatives are aimed at meeting community needs.
Our commitment to environmental sustainability has allowed us to learn valuable information about the flora and fauna of the valley, as well as the conditions of local cultures. As a result, we are carrying out a number of actions to protect and recover the flora and fauna of the areas around our power stations: Tricahue Parrot, Torrent Duck, Freshwater Catfish, including reforestation of around 120 hectares with native species.
